Tsunami Anniversary – Five years of survival and hope
On Dec. 26, 2004, a powerful earthquake off the coast of Sumatra triggered a massive tsunami that smashed into thousands of kilometres of coastline around the Indian Ocean rim. In all, 12 countries were hit; the most devastating damage was in Indonesia, Sri Lanka, Southern India, the Maldives, Myanmar and coastal areas of Thailand and Malaysia.
It was the largest disaster in recent memory and killed more than 225,000 people. Millions more were affected, losing their homes, livelihoods and loved ones. The International Red Cross Movement responded immediately to provide relief and support for the many survivors. Now, five years later, the Red Cross continues to work with communities as they become stronger, healthier and more resilient.
Thanks to the generosity of Canadians and the Government of Canada, since 2004, the Canadian Red Cross and its partners have helped 5 million people and built over 6,500 homes. We continue to implement programs on disaster preparedness, risk reduction and community-based health in Indonesia, Sri Lanka, India and the Maldives.
