Tracing missing family outside of Canada

The Canadian Red Cross can help re-establish contact when you have lost contact with a loved one due to an armed conflict, other situations of violence, migration or a natural disaster. The process involves collecting information about persons who are missing, persons who have died, and vulnerable persons such as children separated from their families and persons deprived of their freedom.

Search requests are accepted based on:

  • the closeness of the relationship
  • reason for loss of contact
  • sufficient information being available to conduct a search
  • attempts already made by the inquirer to locate the sought person have been unsuccessful.

We accept searches for people within Canada only when it concerns family members separated prior to arrival in Canada or when the separation is due to a current disaster within Canada.

How to search for someone

Contact the Canadian Red Cross in your community to begin tracing a missing family member. You should be able to provide as much of the following information as possible.

  • Full name of sought person
  • Date of birth or age
  • Father's name
  • Mother's name
  • Last known address
  • Tribe, clan and sub-clan if applicable
  • Date of last contact
  • Reason for separation
  • Reason for search
  • Your full name
  • Your address
  • Your relationship to the sought person

The Canadian Red Cross endeavours to protect the privacy of all people involved in the search and will not accept cases where the search may put the sought person at risk. The person searched for, if found, always has the right to refuse to release their contact details.
