The Memorandum of Understanding was signed at the Canadian Red Cross national headquarters by John Mulvihill, Deputy Secretary General, Operations of the Canadian Red Cross and Sandra Dunsmore, President of the Pearson Peacekeeping Centre.
The Canadian Red Cross was born of a desire to bring assistance without discrimination to the wounded on the battlefield. Established in 1896 and incorporated in 1909, it endeavours to alleviate human suffering and protect human dignity by bringing assistance and protection to victims of armed conflicts and natural disasters throughout the world.
The Canadian Red Cross’ mission is to improve the lives of vulnerable people by mobilizing the power of humanity in Canada and around the world.
The PPC was established by the Government of Canada in 1994. The centre supports Canada’s contribution to international peace and security by conducting education programs, training and research on all aspects of peace operations.
The Red Cross’ involvement with the PPC is based on the fact that it can participate in the education of civilians, military and police by creating an understanding of the Red Cross’ specific humanitarian role during times of conflict and disaster.
The agreement also ensures ongoing communication and cooperation between the Red Cross and the Pearson Peacekeeping Centre. Both parties will involve one another in their respective events regarding peacekeepers and civil military relations, as well as share information and pool and develop key human resources.
This cooperation will help the Canadian Red Cross to fulfill its mandate as a National Red Cross Society to disseminate International Humanitarian Law and to further its mission.
