Centennial Celebration

Centennial Logo

Over the last century, the Canadian Red Cross has been a huge part of Canadian history and culture. The year 2009 marks the anniversary of 100 years of serving Canadians from managing some of the first hospitals during the Second World War to providing first aid and water safety training to anti-bullying and harassment prevention education. Our role as part of the Red Cross Movement has also been to provide relief services and development projects for many countries around the world. The Canadian Red Cross has helped here at home and internationally to support some of the most vulnerable people over the last century.

Our work in the next century will also be critical important. The Red Cross is working hard on a plan to guide us from the last 100 years to the next and help us to write the chapter in our history. The Canadian Red Cross is poised to continue to expand the critical role we already play as part of the fabric of Canadian society.

We learned from the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies that Canada is the single-largest donor among donor national societies. This speaks to our reputation, the quality of our work and our ability to rise to the occasion in times of need. And in those times of great need, the Red Cross emblem has been a beacon of hope – we will continue to be that light, especially in challenging times in the immediate future and in the longer term as we head into the next century.

The Red Cross has grown and changed over the last hundred years. However, throughout this change, the work of the Red Cross remains as relevant today, in 2009, as it was in 1909. With the continued involvement of members and volunteers who have played a key role in our ongoing success, our work will still be relevant to Canadians in another 100 years.
