Annual Golf Tournament

Golfers Braved Winds & Rain

to Support Local Programs

Nearly $30,000 raised and plans for next year's tournament underway

Heavy rain and cloudy skies failed to dampen the spirits of more than 120 golfers who hit the links on Aug. 30 to help raise nearly $30,000 for local Canadian Red Cross programs.

Edmonton Oilers assistant coach Billy Moores, honorary chair of this year's Annual Red Cross Charity Golf Tournament, offered a few words of welcome and encouragement as golfers prepared for the 8:30 a.m. tee off at the prestigious Highlands Golf Club, which hosted this, the 4th Annual Red Cross Charity Golf Tournament.

"We are all here to support the Red Cross and I am very proud to be part of this event to support the programs here in Edmonton," said Moores, who has been part of the fabric of Edmonton's hockey world for most of the last four decades.

Golfers headed to their first hole just after 8 a.m., and most finished all 18 holes despite the steady downpour. Volunteers and staff, armed with hot coffee and dry towels, toured the course throughout the morning, a welcomed sight by most of the drenched players. But spirits remained high, helped in no small measure to the hot Irish stew, and hot or cold beverages offered along the way.

Once the round was completed, event MC Jason Roberts, of Big Earl, took to the mike encouraging guests to bid on some 37 amazing silent auction packages. Roberts also tried his hand at calling a live auction, boosting to $750 the amount raised for a fly fishing weekend package for two donated by Steam Weavers, with accommodation at Hotel D'Arts in Calgary and transporation by Discount Car Rental. In all, the event raised nearly $30,000.

"What a great event," commented Roberts to the crowd, noting funds raised will support such local Red Cross programs as Emergency Disaster Services, RespectED: Violence and Abuse Prevention, Babysitter's and more.

Moores, a former junior high school and university  teacher, and a long-time hockey coach at many levels, talked about the importance of the work Red Cross does in the community, particularly in reaching out to young people.

"I truly believe in the work Red Cross does, especially in area of youth education," said Moores. "This is so important to our community."

Planning is already underway for next year's event on August 01 2007, don't forget to mark this date on your calender. Thank you sponsors and auction donors.
