Thousands of tsunami survivors are moving into their new Red Cross homes. | |
The first year of the response, focused primarily on meeting the immense emergency needs of the affected populations. The International Federation along with member National Societies are now supporting recovery and reconstruction, in particular in the three worst-affected countries: Indonesia, Sri Lanka and the Maldives.
Red Cross Red Crescent recovery and reconstruction activities include the building of tens of thousands of transitional and permanent homes, the reconstruction of basic infrastructure such as schools and health clinics, the provision of safe water and sanitation, psychological support to survivors, and rebuilding and enhancing livelihoods. As the second year of the response draws to a close, thousands of people are moving into their new homes and economic activity is resuming.
Over 1.7 million people affected by the tsunami disaster in ten countries have received assistance coordinated by the Federation. The Red Cross and Red Crescent Movement in the affected countries and internationally, has mobilized 22,000 volunteers and hundreds of international staff from over 40 national societies.
