Canadian Red Cross - Ontario Zone Announces Power of Humanity Award Winners

Queen Noor of Jordan will be the keynote speaker at the Power of Humanity Awards Dinner

TORONTO, – (April 14, 2004) – The Canadian Red Cross, Ontario Zone will honour three recipients of the Power of Humanity Awards on April 28th, 2004 at the Sheraton Centre Toronto Hotel, in order to recognise their significant humanitarian achievements. 

The awards will go to CISEPO and Dr. Arnold Noyek of Mount Sinai Hospital and the University of Toronto; Br. David Lynch of the Good Shepherd Centre; and Dr. Lynn Marshall of Sunnybrook and Women’s College Health Sciences Centre.  CISEPO is a Canadian international health program that is striving for peace in the Middle East through health initiatives.   Br. David Lynch will receive the award for his creativity and vision in helping the homeless in Toronto, and Dr. Lynn Marshall will be recognized for her key role in the formation of the Canadian Coalition for Green Health Care.

“The Power of Humanity award recipients have demonstrated their commitment to protecting the life and health of others,” said Gord Moore, General Manager, Canadian Red Cross - Ontario Zone.  “Their accomplishments reflect the Red Cross principle of humanity by meeting a priority need in their community.”

“There are many distinctions one can attain in life, however, being honoured as a humanitarian is something very few achieve.  These three initiatives genuinely deserve this recognition,” said Jane Pitfield, Chair of the Power of Humanity Awards Dinner.

CISEPO and Dr. Arnold Noyek

CISEPO is the Canada International Scientific Exchange Program which is based at Mount Sinai Hospital and the University of Toronto.  Since 1984, under the guidance of founder Dr. Noyek, CISEPO’s network of knowledge has been building bridges to peace through health initiatives.  The CISEPO initiative is dedicated to enriching academic medicine, public health and health care in Canada and internationally and contributing to peace building in the Middle East. 

Nine years ago at the urging of the late King Hussein of Jordan, CISEPO was invited to promote Arab and Israeli cooperation through health initiatives.  Canadians are seen as honest brokers and under the umbrella of CISEPO, successfully brought together Israeli, Jordanian and Palestinian individuals and institutions for a common purpose, that being health care.  For more information please visit www.cisepo.ca.

Br. David Lynch and the Good Shepherd Centre

Brother David Lynch, BGS has been the Executive Director of the Good Shepherd Ministries in Toronto since 1995 and oversees the various projects that are designed to help those in need  The Centre helps the homeless and disadvantaged and people living with HIV/AIDS.  Brother David Lynch is the driving force in the development of viable solutions to the homeless and his vision and creativity are reflected in the success of his programs.

Good Shepherd Centre was opened in 1963 by the Little Brothers of the Good Shepherd.  The Brothers have expanded Good Shepherd Refuge Social Ministries to include Good Shepherd Centre, Barrett House, and St. Joseph’s Residence.  For more information please visit www.goodshepherd.ca

Dr. Lynn Marshall

Dr. Lynn Marshall is the Medical Director of the Environmental Health Clinic at Women’s College Ambulatory Care Centre, Sunnybrook and Women’s College Health Sciences Centre.  She has been a key facilitator of partnerships between the medical sector and community/environmental organizations. Most recently, Dr. Marshall played a role in the formation of the Canadian Coalition for Green Health Care.  The Coalition is a national network of hospitals, environmental organizations and health care associations formed in 2000 to promote environmental responsibility in health care.  For more information please visit www.sunnybrookandwomens.on.ca.
