A $20 Mother-Child Health Kit will provide pregnancy medicines and medical supplies for 10 babies and mothers. Think mom and dad need another pair of socks or a sweater this holiday season? Think again. Most Canadians (59 per cent) say they could do without a traditional gift this year in favour of a charitable gift that helps someone in need.

Leading up to GivingTuesday this year, the Canadian Red Cross had research firm IPSOS Reid conduct a survey on holiday giving trends in Canada. Researchers found that a majority (59 per cent) of Canadians agree that they prefer a charitable gift that would help someone else, rather than a traditional gift like a pair of socks or a sweater.

After collecting data from November 17 to November 19, 2015, the survey also found that more than 70 per cent of the 1,006 respondents like the convenience of being able to buy gifts online and one in four (26 per cent) of the gifts that Canadians will give this year are purchased at the last minute.

With all of these last-minute gifts being bought, almost half (46 per cent) of Canadians agree that they worry that the last-minute gifts they purchase are going to disappoint the recipient. Avoiding that disappointment could be as easy as making an online charitable gift – a gift that makes an impact.

Canadian Red Cross launches Gifts for Good campaign

December 1 is GivingTuesday, a day where charities, companies and individuals join together to share commitments, rally for favourite causes and think about others. According to the survey, when it comes to charity during the holiday season, 57 per cent of Canadians say they plan on donating to a charity or volunteering their time. That’s an encouraging sign!

As a GivingTuesday partner, the Canadian Red Cross is offering Canadians the chance to give a Gift for Good this year to help improve lives in Canada and around the world.
