How Canadian youth can help contribute to humanitarian relief in the Philippines

It's often hard for youth to determine how they can make a positive impact globally. Major events such as emergencies and disasters and conflict occur worldwide and sometimes youth may want to contribute, yet they feel as though they don't know how. In the case of Typhoon Haiyan, which struck the Philippines on November 8, 2013, there are a variety of ways youth can help respond.

The toll on the Philippines
More than 16 million people were affected by this devastating disaster.  As a result of this devastating disaster, more than 16 million people were affected. In addition, 4.1 million people remain displaced and 1.2 million homes have been damaged or destroyed. At the moment, 381 evacuation centres are still providing temporary shelter to more than 101,500 individuals.

The Red Cross response to this disaster has been immense, raising more than 30 40 million dollars thanks to generous donors who chose the Canadian Red Cross as their charity of choice. To date, the Red Cross has provided 3.4 million litres of water to more than 1.1 million people, delivered food packages to over 1 million 1,136,385 people, distributed 54,194 hot meals and have reached 104,560 individuals with health and hygiene promotion.

Despite the challenges overcome and the money raised, additional humanitarian assistance is still desperately needed in the Philippines. The effects of Typhoon Haiyan are sure to be long lasting, and the Red Cross is committed to working with the Philippine Red Cross as they continue to respond and help survivors recover from this disaster.
