Become a Canadian Red Cross volunteer today

February 11, 2014

Local emergencies and disasters happen every day. Whether it's a flood, house fire or sudden freezing temperatures, in an emergency, local government and agencies can reach out to the Canadian Red Cross for humanitarian support. Disaster response workers can provide food, clothing, shelter and family reunification services to those in need following a disaster.

Those who volunteer and work with the Canadian Red Cross are humanitarian heroes. And, in return for their services, they can expect opportunities for growth, support from engaged and like-minded people and the opportunity to make an impact in the community or on the world at large.

The Canadian Red Cross has expectations for staff and volunteers, too. If you're working as part of the Red Cross, you need to be committed to the mission and goals of the organization. Red Cross personnel are very dedicated to their work and hold their job to a high standard. They observe the Red Cross Code of Conduct and uphold the seven fundamental principles of the organization. These seven principles are humanity, impartiality, neutrality, independence, voluntary service, unity and universality.

Testimonials from Red Cross staff
Working with the Red Cross isn't just a commitment, it's a passion. It's no wonder that some staff have been with the Canadian non-profit since they were just teens!

Tom, who works in national corporate relations for the Canadian Red Cross in Ottawa, has been with his team for nearly 10 years.

"Being part of an emergency appeal response is an exhilarating and rewarding experience. I know that my actions, whether directly or indirectly, have had a positive impact on the lives of many here in Canada and abroad," he said.

Isabelle, who works in international operations with the Canadian Red Cross in Quebec, has also been with the organization for a decade.

"Over a period of 10 years, my experience with the Red Cross has been varied, rewarding, and interesting. I have gained awareness of global issues by visiting prisons and providing emergency aid in various countries," she said.
