Youth learn the value of water safety with National Lifejacket Day

Spring is finally here, and with it comes the opportunity to enjoy a range of outdoor activities, including swimming.

As one of the most active charity organizations in the country, the Canadian Red Cross strives to improve water safety and awareness of swimming techniques for individuals of all ages in Canada.

For more than 65 years, the Canadian Red Cross has been a leading provider of water safety programs, and has worked to offer a range of comprehensive courses that empower people with the skills they need to swim with confidence.

The benefits of National Lifejacket Day

The Canadian Red Cross works to increase the knowledge that people have of lifejacket use. On May 16, the Canadian Red Cross marks National Lifejacket Day, an annual campaign to encourage and promote the use of lifejackets and personal floatation devices among boaters.

Each year, approximately 400 Canadians drown, while 160 people perish while boating - most of whom were not properly wearing a lifejacket. Small children are especially susceptible to these kind of accidents, as they can drown when submerged in only a few inches of water.

Areas where children may be most likely to drown include bathtubs, backyard pools and other bodies of water.

Make a difference

By participating in events like National Lifejacket Day, today's youth can gain a better sense of how vital safety and preparation can be for preventing aquatic injuries, drowning accidents or other safety issues. Best of all, they can also develop new friends and interests, which could influence their choices in the future.

Lifejackets can make a crucial difference, which is why it's important that people understand how to properly wear and secure them. The Canadian Red Cross is committed to improving water safety throughout the country and giving individuals the knowledge to prevent and respond to emergencies in the water.
