Preventing sexual abuse through violence and abuse prevention programs

Putting a stop to violence - and specifically, the sexual abuse of children - is one of the most important aims of the Canadian Red Cross.

As one of the country's most active non-profit organizations, the Canadian Red Cross is committed to giving individuals the tools they need to recognize and overcome abuse in all of its forms through violence and abuse prevention programs.

Sexual abuse can hurt children in many ways, yet with the knowledge people can gain through these programs, abuse can be prevented and children can be protected against this and many other kinds of threats to their long-term wellness.

How does the Canadian Red Cross help?
When violence and abuse occur in a child's life, it can negatively impact the quality of life that children have and leave behind wounds that are difficult to heal. If sexual abuse happens at the hands of an individual a child knows, it can make recovering even harder and could affect the rest of his or her life.

The Canadian Red Cross works to break the cycle of hurt with violence and abuse prevention programs, yet one of the most essential ways that people are able to put an end to harmful behaviours is to empower the bystander.

Educating adults - including parents, educators, caregivers and others in positions of authority - is the first step toward overcoming abuse. Individuals who are trained to recognize the signs of abuse can better assist children and can also make the necessary steps toward changing behaviour for the better.

For children, knowing that there's someone to reach out to can make all the difference in the world, which is why violence and abuse prevention programs seek to give bystanders the tools they need to help children in times of need.

How you can help
Sexual abuse is a serious issue that can damage the emotional and physical well-being of those who are affected by it. Through violence and abuse prevention programs, the Canadian Red Cross strives to reduce the instances of exploitation throughout the country and give people the resources they need to put an end to harmful behaviours.

With the support of Canadians like you, the Canadian Red Cross is able to better assist people in need and offer helpful programs that target violence and abuse prevention.
