Online program helps reduce youth violence

Many children and youth around the world are subjected to violence and abuse every day, whether it's from their peers, parents, romantic partners or members of their local community. Not only can acts like bullying and adolescent dating violence cause bodily harm to these individuals, but they can leave an emotional and psychological mark as well. As a result, children and youth may experience physical and mental health issues ranging from cuts and bruises to severe depression and anxiety.

As one of the premier charity organizations in Canada, the Canadian Red Cross recognizes the urgency of lending a helping hand to children and youth in need. Through prevention education and the promotion of healthy relationships, the Red Cross' Violence and Abuse Prevention programs aim to create safe environments free of violence, bullying, abuse and exploitation. Beyond directly improving the health and happiness of children who have endured such hardships, these efforts by the Canadian Red Cross are designed to strengthen whole communities as well.

Partnering with Government of Canada
The Government of Canada has recently pledged to support the Canadian Red Cross' ongoing violence and abuse prevention efforts through better youth education via a new online program. This novel Internet resource is designed to promote healthy relationships and help put a stop to harmful relationship violence among Canadian adolescents, which has become a national concern in recent years.

"We are pleased to receive the Government of Canada's support for this new project to help young Canadians have respectful and healthy relationships," said Conrad Sauvé, secretary general and CEO of the Canadian Red Cross.

With increasing reports of Canadian youth experiencing troubled and potentially violent relationships, both the Canadian Red Cross and the Government of Canada have recognized a need for comprehensive action and awareness efforts. The collaborative online violence and abuse prevention program is primarily geared toward encouraging respectful and happy romantic partnerships with young people between 14 and 18 years old.

"Recent incidents demonstrate the need to do all we can to prevent the tragic consequences of violence, cyber-bullying, and online exploitation," said the Honourable Rona Ambrose, Minister of Public Works and Government Services and Minister for Status of Women. "Our Government is pleased to partner with the Canadian Red Cross and Respect Group Inc. on this project to prevent violence among Canadian teens."
