Emergency field hospital arrives in Jordan's capital

The ongoing conflict in Syria has forced more than 1.9 million people to flee the country, with women and children making up three-quarters of the refugee population. Jordan is currently hosting more than 518,000 registered Syrian refugees – many have faced harsh conditions at home and have had limited access to health care for months.

To address the critical medical and surgical care of thousands of Syrian refugees in Jordan, the Canadian Red Cross, in partnership with the Finnish, German and Norwegian Red Cross societies, is establishing a field hospital for the residents of Azraq Refugee Camp, which is currently under construction and located approximately 100 kilometres from the Syrian border.

Both the camp and the hospital will be operational in the coming weeks. Once fully functional, the hospital will serve as a secondary-level hospital, providing surgical and medical care, x-ray and laboratory services, and maternal and child care, initially for 55,000 refugees. If needed, the camp can be expanded to house up to 130,000 refugees, and the capacity of the hospital can also match that of the camp.

The Red Cross has committed to maintaining the hospital for at least one year.
