The Canadian Red Cross is positioned to assist the Government of Canada in supporting 25,000 Syrian refugees starting their new lives in Canada. The Red Cross has experience with refugee arrivals and is well-equipped to assist as Canada offers sanctuary to families forced to flee violence and instability.

“This response is driven by compassion, empathy and the humanitarian imperative to act,” said Conrad Sauvé, president and CEO of the Canadian Red Cross.  “We are proud to support this important effort that will provide help and hope to over 25,000 of the world’s most vulnerable citizens.”

Working closely alongside government partners as well as community resettlement agencies the Red Cross is ready to support refugees as they transition to their new communities.  This may jointly include referral services as well as ongoing basic needs, support with setting up a new home and helping people regain lost livelihoods.

At the government’s request, the Canadian Red Cross can also provide support at Welcome Centres and temporary accommodation sites if needed.

“The situation is complex and so are the solutions,” adds Sauvé. “We are proud to support this joint effort that will help provide better futures to thousands of refugees fleeing their homes in search of a better life for themselves and their families.”

Canadians wishing to support families as they transition to their new lives in Canada are encouraged to make a financial donation to the Syrian Refugee Arrival Appeal. Donations can be made online at www.redcross.ca or by calling 1-800-418-1111, or at your local Red Cross office. The work of the Canadian Red Cross would not be possible without generous donations from the public and corporate supporters.
