(WINNIPEG, July 24, 2014) – The Canadian Red Cross has named two deserving Manitobans, who are dedicated to improving the lives of people in Manitoba and around the world through hard work and generosity, as the recipients of the 2014 Red Cross Humanitarian of the Year and Young Humanitarian of the Year awards.

“Susan Lewis and Muuxi Adam have both given selflessly and enthusiastically of their time in the pursuit of making the world better for everyone,” said Shawn Feely, provincial director, Manitoba, for the Canadian Red Cross. “While they do not do this to garner recognition, they definitely deserve the gratitude of the Red Cross and the people of Manitoba.”

The awards will be given to Adam and Lewis at the annual Canadian Red Cross Power of Humanity luncheon, presented by Manitoba Liquor & Lotteries, on Sept. 10 at the Victoria Inn.

“We invite Manitobans to join us for the event and honour these two individuals who have truly harnessed the power of humanity to help people around the world,” said Feely.

“Manitoba Liquor & Lotteries is proud to present the Power of Humanity Awards Luncheon, in recognizing local humanitarians in our community,” said Larry Wandowich, chief community relations and marketing officer for Manitoba Liquor & Lotteries.

“This year’s award recipients have shown tireless dedication to worthy causes, through their volunteerism and philanthropic efforts. Ms. Lewis and Mr. Adam are proof of what a positive difference an individual can make in our communities. On behalf of Manitoba Liquor & Lotteries, thank you for all the work that you do, and congratulations,” Wandowich added.

Humanitarian of the Year recipient: Susan Lewis

Lewis has worked to help people in need for 40 years in various roles with the United Way. She has been president of the United Way of Winnipeg since 1985. Over the years, Lewis has devoted a great deal of time and effort to a variety of charities and organizations, including the Winnipeg Poverty Reduction Council and the St-Boniface Hospital board, among others.

Young Humanitarian of the Year recipient: Muuxi Adam

Separated from his family, Adam came to Canada on his own as a teenage refugee from Somalia. Now 26, Adam has worked tirelessly to help refugees in other parts of the world by building a school for refugee children in Kenya through the organization he co-founded, Humankind International Inc. Here in Winnipeg, he helps newcomers to Canada, especially youth, through the Immigrant and Refugee Community Organization of Manitoba.
