Ottawa, September 5, 2015 - The Canadian Red Cross is calling for increased aid and a more collaborative, global response to assist people caught in Europe’s worst refugee crisis since the Second World War.

As the recent tragic deaths and events that unfolded in the Mediterranean demonstrate, the crisis is taking a tremendous toll on families forced to flee violence and instability in Syria and neighboring countries. Although Red Cross/Red Crescent teams have been on the ground helping these people for some time, the emergency is intensifying and more aid is desperately needed, said Hossam Elsharkawi, Director of Emergencies and Recovery, International Operations, at the Canadian Red Cross.

“Increasingly, people feel forced to take terrible risks, whether it’s over treacherous seas or by foot over miles of dangerous, difficult terrain,” said Elsharkawi. “These people need more aid and a more effective response to this ongoing humanitarian crisis.”

So far this year, about 350,000 people seeking refuge have entered Europe. Red Cross has provided first aid, medical care, psychological support and distribution of food, temporary shelter and other urgently needed items. But the crisis has intensified and millions of people are still displaced inside Syria and other countries such as Afghanistan and Iraq.

Canadians wishing to support Red Cross efforts can make a financial donation to the Refugee Crisis Appeal, by calling 1-800-418-1111, or by contacting their local Canadian Red Cross office. A financial donation is the best way to help, as Red Cross/Red Crescent societies already have trained personnel working on the crisis.
