Funds raised throughout October support disaster responses across Canada

Walmart Canada’s in-store fundraising campaign for the Canadian Red Cross during October raised $2.7 million to support disaster preparedness and response activities for communities across the country. This amount includes donations from customers across Canada and a contribution of $810,000 from Walmart.

“Thanks in part to our longstanding partnership with Walmart Canada, the Red Cross is able to be there before, during and after disaster strikes to meet the needs of the most vulnerable,” said Conrad Sauvé, president and CEO of the Canadian Red Cross. “We’ve seen firsthand the impact this support has on Canadian families when they need it most, and the Red Cross is deeply grateful for the commitment and generosity of Walmart, its employees and its customers.”

Since 2003, Walmart Canada has raised and donated over $37 million to the Canadian Red Cross. This year alone, Walmart raised over $5.4 million, during this annual Red Cross Campaign as well as in response to the devastating Fort McMurray wildfires this past May. Donations support the distribution of essential emergency supplies, hot meals, new clothing and a safe place to stay for those affected by a disaster, as well as training and equipment for local volunteer teams. From house fires to hurricanes, disasters can strike anyone, anywhere. On average, the Red Cross assists 131 Canadians daily and responds to a disaster every 3.5 hours.

“Our customers and associates feel strongly about the valuable role the Canadian Red Cross has in our communities during times of disaster,” said Christine Bomé, Senior Director Public Affairs, Walmart Canada. “We are extremely proud to support the Canadian Red Cross and their commitment to Canadian communities when they need it most.”
