(Ottawa, November 14, 2013) The Canadian Red Cross is pleased to announce that nine banks in Canada are accepting cash donations in support of Red Cross relief efforts in communities affected by Typhoon Haiyan.

“Since before the typhoon made landfall, Red Cross teams have been working around the clock to support thousands of people in the storm’s path,” says Conrad Sauvé, secretary general and CEO of the Canadian Red Cross. “We are grateful to the participating banks for making it easier for Canadians to support Red Cross relief operations underway.”

Since Haiyan made landfall, the Red Cross has been working to provide urgently-needed assistance in affected communities.  This includes carrying out search and rescue operations, distributing food, and mobilizing items like blankets, jerry cans, hygiene kits and sleeping mats.

Canadians wishing to make a financial donation can donate to the Typhoon Haiyan fund by calling 1-800-418-1111 or by giving online at www.redcross.ca.  Canadians can also visit their local Red Cross office or one of the participating banks in Canada listed below.  Cheques should be made payable to the Canadian Red Cross and earmarked Typhoon Haiyan.

The following banks are also accepting financial donations from Wednesday, November 13 to Friday, December 13, 2013:

BMO Financial Group
Canadian Western Bank
CIBC
HSBC Bank Canada
ING DIRECT – donations can be made online directly from client accounts
National Bank
RBC
Scotiabank
TD Canada Trust

The Government of Canada will match the donations of individual Canadians between November 8 and December 9, 2013. Those funds will go into a relief fund that is separate from the Canadian Red Cross and will be administered by the Government of Canada. Funds raised through this program will support on-going humanitarian assistance in typhoon affected communities.
