Canadian banks accepting donations for Red Cross relief efforts following Hurricane Matthew devastation

October 12, 2016

The Canadian Red Cross is pleased to announce that eight banks in Canada are accepting cash donations in support of Red Cross relief efforts in countries affected by Hurricane Matthew.

“Hurricane Matthew has resulted in widespread damage and extensive humanitarian need,” says Conrad Sauvé, President and CEO of the Canadian Red Cross.  “Thanks to the help of these banks, Canadians now have another convenient way to support people impacted by this disaster.”

One of the strongest hurricanes to hit the Caribbean in recent history, Matthew’s torrential rains and winds have flooded towns and roads, and destroyed homes and buildings. More than one million have been impacted and hundreds of thousands are in need of humanitarian assistance. There will be a great need for healthcare and access to clean drinking water, as the potential for waterborne illnesses and disease outbreaks will be high following heavy rains and flooding. It has also wreaked havoc in Florida, Georgia, North Carolina and South Carolina.

The following banks are accepting financial donations in branches across Canada and online from October 12 to November 12:

BMO Financial Group
Canadian Western Bank
CIBC
HSBC Bank Canada
National Bank
RBC
Scotiabank
TD Bank Group

Canadians can also support people impacted by this disaster by making a donation to the Canadian Red Cross Hurricane Matthew Appeal online at www.redcross.ca, by calling 1-800-418-1111, or by contacting their local Canadian Red Cross office.
