(WINNIPEG, May 1, 2014) The Canadian Red Cross wants Manitobans to shine a light on people who have demonstrated their human spirit by making the world a better place by working to help others through charity and philanthropy.

Starting Monday, the Canadian Red Cross is accepting nominations for the Humanitarian of the Year and Young Humanitarian of the Year Awards, which is open to individuals under 30. The awards will be handed out at September’s annual Power of Humanity Luncheon, presented by Manitoba Liquor & Lotteries.

“If you know of a Manitoban who has demonstrated great compassion by selflessly working to help others, please nominate them for one of our two humanitarian awards,” said Shawn Feely, provincial director, Manitoba, for the Canadian Red Cross.

“While these individuals do not do what they do for the recognition, the Red Cross believes it is important to honour the people who make significant contributions to improving life in Manitoba through volunteerism, charity and philanthropic efforts.”

To nominate someone, go to www.redcross.ca/manitoba/events/poh starting Monday, click on nominations and fill out the form. The nomination deadline is May 30.

Not only does the Power of Humanity Luncheon recognize the human spirit in Manitoba with the presentation of the awards, it also inspires people to make a contribution to improve their community. As well, the luncheon generates donations so the Red Cross can continue to help people and communities prepare for and deal with disasters, across the province.
