Banks accepting donations for Red Cross Africa Drought Appeal

June 02, 2017

The Canadian Red Cross is pleased to announce that eight banks in Canada will be accepting cash donations from the public in support of Red Cross efforts to assist those affected by a combination of drought and conflict resulting in a severe food crisis across Africa.

Severe food insecurity and the threat of famine in countries across east and central Africa have placed tens of millions of men, women and children on the cusp of an unprecedented humanitarian catastrophe. At no other time in recent history has severe hunger and starvation loomed so large.

How Canadians can help
The following banks are accepting financial donations in branches across Canada from June 2 to June 30:

  • BMO Financial Group
  • Canadian Western Bank
  • CIBC
  • HSBC Bank Canada
  • National Bank
  • RBC
  • Scotiabank
  • TD Bank Group
Canadians wishing to support our efforts can also make a financial donation to the Africa Drought Appeal online at www.redcross.ca, by calling 1-800-418-1111 or by contacting their local Canadian Red Cross office.

For every eligible donation made by individual Canadians to the Canadian Red Cross and other registered Canadian charities between March 17 and June 30, 2017, the Government of Canada will contribute an equivalent amount to their own Famine Relief Fund. This fund will support Canadian and international organizations currently hard at work helping those in need in the affected countries and neighbouring regions.

QUOTE

“In the face of the current humanitarian crisis in Africa the Red Cross is calling for rapid action. I was recently in Southern Ethiopia and saw first-hand the severe affects of the drought. Children can’t go to school and adults can’t go to work because their days are devoted to one thing: survival. We thank Canadians for their ongoing generosity when faced with these incredibly urgent needs.”

Conrad Sauvé, President and CEO, Canadian Red Cross.
