Aviva Canada and the Canadian Red Cross deepen partnership to deliver essential community health services to Canadians

TORONTO | July 12, 2016

Aviva Canada has become the national Founding Community Health and Wellness Partner of the Canadian Red Cross. Over the next three years, Aviva Canada’s additional $750,000 commitment will be instrumental in enabling the Red Cross to address the growing health needs of Canadians.

“Aviva Canada is already a long-term partner of our Ready When the Time Comes program, helping people prepare for and respond to disasters,” said Conrad Sauvé, President and CEO of the Canadian Red Cross. “We’re very grateful for their additional support of our community health programs that provide exceptional care to seniors and vulnerable people, assisting them so they can live independently and with dignity.”

Aviva Canada’s contribution will enable the Canadian Red Cross to deliver improved community health services that support the well-being of over 190,000 clients across Canada. These services include transportation, nutritional support (such as Meals on Wheels) and social inclusion programs. In addition, Aviva will purchase over 5,000 pieces of medical equipment, such as wheelchairs and walkers, with the potential to help up to 20,000 Canadians over three years who are living with injury or illness.

“We’re proud to expand our partnership with the Red Cross to be there for Canadians when they need us most,” said Greg Somerville, President and CEO of Aviva Canada. “Through this partnership, we’ll help the Red Cross meet the current and emerging community health care needs of their clients. Together, we look forward to people leading longer and healthier lives by delivering innovative community health care solutions where they most often prefer to receive it – in their own homes.”

The changing landscape of health care

People 65 years of age and older are Canada’s fastest growing age group and Canadians are living longer with chronic illness. This growing demographic and their evolving health care needs have necessitated a transformation in the way health care is delivered.

Red Cross Community Health and Wellness programs are playing an increasingly important role in the health care system, addressing the needs of seniors and vulnerable populations and enabling these individuals to age and recover from illness or injury in their own communities. The partnership will expand these programs significantly over the next few years to help keep up with demand and provide a continuum of care – allowing people to live well for longer.
