Ottawa, September 26, 2014 - The Canadian Red Cross recognizes Prime Minister Stephen Harper’s continued leadership in Maternal, Newborn and Child Health (MNCH).  Since 2005, and in partnership with the Canadian government, the Canadian Red Cross has invested nearly $90 million in 24 low-resource countries to improve the lives of women and children.  Our programs have reached more than 13 million beneficiaries directly and have indirectly benefited another 40 million.

The Canadian Red Cross and its partners know first hand of the devastating effects of conflict and disasters on the lives of women and children.  Although MNCH efforts have been successful to date, fifty percent of the millions of mothers and children who currently die are those in fragile states.

The Government of Canada’s continued support for the Canadian Red Cross and other humanitarian partners is a welcome commitment as we strive together to save the lives of vulnerable women and children around the world.
