(Kelowna) – The City of Kelowna has officially proclaimed March as Red Cross Month.

Mayor Walter Gray made the proclamation as he recognized Canadian Red Cross volunteers have been active in the Kelowna region for more than 100 years in preventing and alleviating human suffering.

“The Red Cross is a reflection of Kelowna residents’ spirit of generosity, caring and selflessness,” said Gray. “With March is Red Cross Month, we want to recognize that Red Cross is active right here at home and not just internationally.”

Red Cross programs and services directly served more than 450,000 people in British Columbia last year with the support of more than 2,200 volunteers. From disaster response to health equipment loans, water safety and first aid training to violence and abuse prevention education, the Red Cross is active every day in your community.

“Red Cross works with the City of Kelowna to ensure its most vulnerable citizens have what they need to get back on their feet,” said John Richey, Red Cross Southern Interior Regional Manager. “March is Red Cross Month is a chance for us to thank our many supporters and to remind people we’re here to help in your community.”

The Canadian Red Cross Society is a non-profit, volunteer-based humanitarian organization dedicated to improving the situation of the most vulnerable in Canada and throughout the world. Kelowna residents can make a difference by making a donation or by contacting their local Red Cross office to learn about volunteer opportunities.
