(Ottawa, December 12, 2013) Banks across Canada have extended the deadline for accepting donations in support of Red Cross relief efforts in the Philippines following Typhoon Haiyan.

“Thanks to these banks, Canadians have another easy way to contribute to Red Cross recovery efforts in the Philippines,” says Conrad Sauvé, secretary general and CEO of the Canadian Red Cross.  “One month on, we continue to support hundreds of thousands of people in the communities hit hardest by this devastating disaster.”

Over 6,000 volunteers are working with the Philippine Red Cross to deliver crucial assistance to those in need.  This includes distributing items such as food packages, hot meals, water, hygiene kits, and medical support.

Canadians wishing to make a financial donation can donate to the Typhoon Haiyan fund by calling 1-800-418-1111 or by giving online.  Canadians can also visit their local Red Cross office or one of the participating banks in Canada listed below.  Cheques should be made payable to the Canadian Red Cross and earmarked Typhoon Haiyan.

The following banks are accepting financial donations from Wednesday, November 13 to Monday, December 23, 2013:

BMO Financial Group
Canadian Western Bank
CIBC
HSBC Bank Canada
ING DIRECT – donations can be made online directly from client accounts
National Bank
RBC
Scotiabank
TD Canada Trust

The Government of Canada will match the donations of individual Canadians between November 8 and December 23, 2013. Those funds will go into a relief fund that is separate from the Canadian Red Cross and will be administered by the Government of Canada. Funds raised through this program will support on-going humanitarian assistance in typhoon affected communities.
