HELP Equipment Technician

The Canadian Red Cross, a non-profit, humanitarian organization dedicated to helping Canadians as well as the vulnerable throughout the world, is currently seeking a casual Health Equipment Loan Program (HELP) Equipment Technician.
Reporting to the Community Health Coordinator, the incumbent will be primarily responsible for the transportation / delivery of health related equipment as well as technical repair and cleaning of the equipment.
Key Responsibilities:
  • Transport and set-up of health equipment within the Central Health region of Newfoundland, as well as, to client’s homes.
  • Repair, clean, and perform general maintenance of health care equipment including hospital beds and mattresses, manual wheelchairs, walkers, bathing aids, and other related health care equipment to established standards. 
  • Maintain an inventory log of all completed projects, as well as an accurate inventory count of health care equipment.
  • Coordinate scheduling of deliveries, pick ups and/or repairs of hospital beds in the Central Health region of Newfoundland.
  • Employees and Volunteers at every level are responsible for safe work practices and to adhere to practices outlined in their applicable provincial Occupational Health and Safety Act.
  • Support other Red Cross initiatives, as needed, to provide for a coordinated team effort to meeting the needs of the most vulnerable in the community.
The minimum qualifications for this job are completion of high school diploma, and a minimum of two years of safe driving experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience. Preference will be given to candidates that are able to provide documentation of appropriate mechanical training courses.
  • Excellent customer service skills are mandatory.
  • Excellent organization and time management skills and excellent phone etiquette.
  • Strong communication skills, verbal and written in English is mandatory.
  • Demonstrated mechanical aptitude and trouble shooting capabilities (documented completion of mechanical training courses ideal).
  • Able to do heavy lifting (75lbs to 100lbs).
  • Experience with seniors, cognitively impaired and physically disabled clients.
  • Able to work efficiently and effectively in fast paced  environment.
  • Familiarity with computers and inventory control systems is a definite asset.
  • Ability to handle highly confidential and sensitive information.
  • Demonstrated experience in a work order shop environment (e.g., vehicle repair and maintenance) is an asset.
  • Previous WHIMIS and Occupational Health and Safety training is considered an asset.
  • Ability to travel within the Central Regional Health Authority is required.
  • A valid driver’s license and satisfactory driver’s abstract is required.
  • A satisfactory criminal record and vulnerable sector checks are required.
  • Standard First Aid & CPR certification is required.
