The Canadian Red Cross Society, a non-profit, humanitarian organization dedicated to helping Canadians, as well as the most vulnerable throughout the world, is seeking a Coordinator for the Disaster Management (DM) department.  Reporting to the Manager, Operations, DM, BC and Yukon, this position ensures the capacity to provide assistance to people affected by international and domestic disasters (including catastrophic disasters), health emergencies, and/or internal conflict. The incumbent provides leadership in the implementation and monitoring of the DM programs and response priorities while developing and maintaining strong relationships at regional and local levels, and supporting fund development and public affairs initiatives.  
 
Key Responsibilities
  • Manages disaster management volunteers from recruitment through training, coaching, recognition and evaluation stages.
  • Builds and maintains partnerships with relevant key stakeholders in a continuous effort to enhance response capacity.
  • Participates in the development, preparation and implementation of disaster management program objectives and emergency response plans in the assigned geographic area.
  • Plays a key role during local, provincial and national disaster responses as required.
  • Ensures effective liaison with respective partners during disasters, as well as during preparation and follow-up as needed.
  • Coordinates disaster preparedness activities in an all-hazards approach with particular emphasis on risks relevant to the assigned area.
  • Monitors and supports adherence to service contracts and other affiliate agreements.
  • Provides disaster management support to Red Cross locations throughout the assigned geographic area as needed.
 
Qualifications
Education and Experience:
The minimum qualifications for this position include completion of a Post-secondary degree and at least three (3) years of job-related experience in Emergency/Disaster Management, Community Development, and/or Social Sciences, experience in volunteer management, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
 
Knowledge:
  • General knowledge and good understanding of disaster preparation and mitigation, response, and other humanitarian issues.
  • Knowledge of volunteer management, and leadership within a volunteer-based organization.
 
Abilities and Skills:
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills in English including training in media and public speaking
  • Strong program planning and evaluation skills
  • Advanced organizational and analytical skills
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office applications (Word, Outlook, Excel, Power Point)
  • Able to manage multiple projects and priorities in a fast-paced, changing environment
  • A self-directed, resourceful approach
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team
  • A valid BC Class 5 Driver’s License
  • First Aid Certification or a willingness to take training
Assets:
  • Leadership experience in emergency and disaster response
  • Fluency in a second language
 
Working Conditions
  • Travel throughout the region and province, occasional travel outside the province.
  • Work non-traditional hours, and be on-call and respond to emergency/disaster related requests.
  • This position requires a successful Canadian criminal record check, a vulnerable sector check and a satisfactory driver’s abstract.
