Communications Advisor, Manitoba, Saskatchewan and Nunavut

The Canadian Red Cross Society, a non-profit, humanitarian organization dedicated to helping Canadians, as well as the most vulnerable throughout the world, is seeking a Communications Advisor, Manitoba, Saskatchewan and Nunavut. Reporting to the Communications Manager, Manitoba and Nunavut, and with a dotted reporting line to the Senior Manager of Communications, Saskatchewan, this position acts in accordance with Society policies and procedures to help the organization achieve its humanitarian vision and strategic mission. This is done by protecting and enhancing the image of the Canadian Red Cross, acting as a communication support service primarily to the Communications Leads and Provincial Program Leads; generating publicity for Red Cross programs and services; coordinating media relations in a way that encourages accurate, balanced coverage of Red Cross issues; supporting various projects in both provinces, and supporting personnel during disaster responses in Manitoba.


Key Responsibilities:

  • Provides media relations support as required for both provinces, responding to media inquiries and conducting media outreach as needed.
  • Covers the Manitoba and/or Saskatchewan media lines, when required.
  • Develops relationships with key media members in both provinces to benefit the Red Cross in future situations.
  • Writes media outreach materials, such as advisories and releases, as required, while adhering to Canadian Press style.
  • Assists the Managers with conducting media training for staff and volunteers.
  • Supports programs in both jurisdictions with basic design work, as required. Also, liaises with freelance designers and/or the Marketing Hub for larger projects, as needed.
  • Leads and provides support to the majority of non-shared projects for both provinces (e.g., RED Gala, Tiffany Circle, Power of Community, Lottery/Raffle, etc.) by:
    • Working with project leads to develop and implement communication plans
    • Supporting the production of written communications products and publications such as: speaking notes, video scripts, report backs, brochures, posters
    • Supporting the production of electronic communication products and publications such as: PowerPoints, blogs, social media assets, web pages/sections, hot sheets
    • Liaising with the Marketing Hub, communications volunteers, graphic designers, web services and printers
    • Ensuring branding consistency, including CP style and protecting the Red Cross emblem
  • ​During disasters at Level 3 or lower, will ensure continuity of business and support of ongoing projects outside of the disaster for MB/NU and Saskatchewan.

 

Qualifications
Education and Experience:

The minimum requirements for this position include post-secondary education in Communications, Public Relations, Marketing, Journalism or related field, and one to three (1-3) years of communications and/or media experience, including experience preparing communications products through traditional and social media channels, experience with the Manitoba and Saskatchewan media environments or an equivalent combination of education and experience. 

 

Knowledge:

  • Expert knowledge of Canadian Press style

Abilities and Skills

  • Demonstrated ability to write at a high-level in English
  • Strong verbal communication skills in English
  • Demonstrated experience and capacity to work in a high-stress environment
  • Excellent editing abilities
  • Detail-oriented
  • Customer service-oriented
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite, including Word, Excel, Publisher and PowerPoint
  • Ability to plan, manage, and successfully complete projects within given timelines
  • Ability to work independently and to collaborate in a team environment
  • Current First Aid Certification, or willingness to take training
  • Valid Provincial Class 5 driver’s license

Assets:

  • Knowledge of Red Cross programs
  • Experience in large organizations and/or the not-for-profit sector
  • Fluency in French 
  • Photography and videography skills
  • Issues management experience
  • Familiarity with web design, graphic design and print production
  • Volunteer management experience
  • Experience in working with a diverse population and an understanding of cultural issues

Working Conditions

  • 35-hour work week, 5 days per week that will include some evenings and weekends.
  • Work- related travel is occasionally required.
  • May be required to work non-traditional hours, carry a cellphone, be on-call, and respond to emergency related disaster requests.
  • This position requires a successful Canadian criminal record check, a vulnerable sector check and a satisfactory driver’s abstract
